Merel Boers, PhD

Co‑founder & Director

Merel is a Dutch health tech entrepreneur with a medical technology background and a PhD in image analysis in stroke.
One out of nine women ever to obtain the highest honors for her PhD research at the Technical University of Twente, Merel was awarded the Prof Vooijs award for the most clinically relevant research.

Focused on creating value and making a difference, Merel has a clear vision for the company and the role of AI in the emergency workflow.

A regular speaker at events hosted by Google, HPE and universities, in 2021 Merel has been awarded the EU Prize for Women Innovators in that year.

Michael Macilquham

Chief Executive Officer

Michael is an accomplished business leader with over 20 years of experience in sales, marketing, and operations.
He has a proven track record of building successful teams, driving revenue growth, and executing strategic initiatives.

Prior to joining Nicolab, Michael held various leadership positions at Siemens Healthineers, and was responsible for driving revenue growth, developing strategic partnerships, and launching innovative products and solutions.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Diagnostic Radiography and a Master of Health Science majoring in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, both from the University of Sydney.

Charlie Bell

Chief Financial Officer

Charlie is an Australian accountant specializing in financial reporting, governance, and stakeholder relations and management, with over ten years of experience in professional services working with pre-IPO, ASX-listed, and large private companies across multiple statutory jurisdictions.

Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, Charlie holds a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Accountancy and Business Law.

Jessica Adams

Chief Operations Officer

Jessica is a strategic transformation professional with experience in strategy, project management and operations.
Working in management consulting, Jessica delivered a variety of projects across different industries, giving her valuable insights into operational practices, policies and procedures.

Renan Sales Barros, PhD

Chief Technology Officer & Co‑founder

Renan is a Brazilian computer scientist with a background in biomedical engineering. He moved to the Netherlands in 2013 to investigate high-performance computing in stroke at the Amsterdam Medical Center.

Honored with the Best Computer Scientist Graduate Award for high grades, he introduced deep learning models to the research group and published multiple articles on the topic.

Renan runs the development team, where his problem-solving attitude and expertise help tackle the team’s challenges not as obstacles but just as puzzles to be solved.
